FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions FAQs

Q: Do I need a referral from a health care professional?
A: No. Simply contact Vicki at Sequoia Psychology by telephone or email form, to discuss your situation and needs. If you are unsure whether or not you would benefit from Sequoia Psychology support, we would be happy to discuss this with you.

Q: Will my sessions be confidential?
A: Session content is strictly confidential and off the record (i.e. The fact you have sought help from a Psychologist will not appear on your work or medical records unless of course you are sent by your employer via their occupational health service or your Doctor or a private health scheme). Even so, the actual content of your sessions will remain private. However there are very rare legal exceptions (these include if we thought you were at risk of harm to yourself or others or you revealed information about a crime). Also there may a time when it might be helpful to speak to your Doctor (about your medication for example) but we would always discuss this with you and seek your consent.

Q: How many sessions will I need?
A: This varies greatly from person to person and very much depends on the nature of the problem and what you want to get out of the sessions. A good rule of thumb is to commit to six sessions, and then on session six, we’ll review, see how you’re going, and see if you need any more. If you find that you don’t need that many sessions, that’s fine too. Also, we have to be realistic; no one therapy framework works for everyone, so if our approach doesn’t seem right for you, or you’re not happy with the way it’s progressing, we will endeavour to refer you on to services that have different approach.

Q: How long are the sessions?
A: The Sessions are usually 60 minutes, which includes 50 minutes of working together,  with 5-10 minutes at the end for payment and rebooking.

Q: What can I expect during our first meeting?
A: Our first meeting (via phone or face-to-face) usually involves getting to know a bit more about you in order to fully assess your current situation. You may be asked to complete a number of health-related questionnaires. This is an important basis for our work and from that we can start to form an idea for a plan of action and decide where we need to focus in order to attain your goals.

Q: How can I get the most out of the sessions?
A: A key part of the approach we take will involve you learning new skills in the session and practicing them in between sessions. The more you practise, the more benefits you’ll get and vice-versa. What this means is, that in some sessions we will actually need to bring up some of those painful thoughts, feelings, memories, sensations and urges during the session – so you can practice using these new skills to handle them better. At times this active way of working may be very challenging. However, we will be working collaboratively, as equal team-players – so you will never be pushed or coerced into anything you are unwilling to do.

Q: When are appointments available?
A: All sessions are by appointment only.  Appointments are available between the following flexible times:

– Weekdays: 8:00am – 9.00pm (Some time slots will be telephone/Skype only)
– Saturdays & Sundays: (By arrangement, please ask)

Availability:  Appointments are usually available with a week’s notice. Just let us know and we can work something out.

Q: Where are the sessions held?
A: Sequoia Psychology mainly operate a telephone/internet-based service; some people prefer this due to the flexibility and convenience. However, if  you prefer face-to-face our consulting rooms are based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Alternatively, we are happy to discuss Home Visits (if appropriate and within a local radius).  Please note:  a charge will be made for travel time in addition to the usual fees.

We are considering new locations all the time

Q: What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
A: If you need to change or cancel an appointment at least 48 hours notice is required. Less notice means we will have to charge you if you cancel (unless we can fill your slot).  We aim to be flexible, therefore, charges are 50% of the total fee if you cancel three hours before your appointment time, within three hours 100% of the fee will be charged.

A telephone or a Skype session will be offered as an alternative to a face-to-face session and if this is declined then cancellation charges will still apply as above.

Q: If the sessions do not provide complete stress-free life, can I get my money back?
A: The effects of psychological intervention varies from person to person, therefore a cure or money back guarantee does not apply.

Q: What if I am going on holiday during our sessions?
A: Please let us know of any holidays or planned breaks with as much notice as possible to preserve the continuity of our work and we will do the same.

Q: What Data Protection procedures do you have?

A: Sequoia Psychology Ltd is registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Information Commissioners Office, which means our data control procedures are regulated and are in accordance with the Data Protection Act and GDPR.
